A Petition to the Surgeon General of the United States of America
On the Issue of Rape

This petition calls upon the Surgeon General of the United States of America to declare the trauma of rape a national health problem of epidemic proportions.

  • Whereas rape is a violent act of aggression against an individual,
  • Whereas millions of individuals living in the United States of America have been raped,
  • * Whereas rape causes victims immediate and long term physical and psychological trauma, including Post-traumatic Stress,
  • Whereas the trauma of rape impairs the immediate and long term functioning of victims
Therefore, we, the undersigned, call upon the Surgeon General to: 1. Declare the trauma of rape a national health problem of epidemic proportion, and; 2. Garner and devote all the necessary public and private resources to address the immediate and long-term effects of rape.
